Paintings of Driftwood and Seashells
Natural sculpture
Size 46x38 cm
Walking at La Tamarissiere, near Cap d'Agde one morning in December, we found the beach littered with driftwood. Wonderful shapes and textures. This one reminded me of Barbara Hepworth's sculptures that frame the landscape in her garden in St. Ives, Cornwall.

Yes, it's the same piece. I'm working on a series of paintings now of a really massive sea polished root that I persuaded Andy and Matt to drag up the beach and heave into the car.

Seashell study #1
Size 33x22 cm
These were fun to do and I'd like to add some more shells at some time in the future. I enjoyed the more abstract feel of study 1.
Seashell study #2
Size 33x22 cm
This shell was so bright, shiny and clean that I chose a plain, uncluttered background to show off its simplicity.
Seashell study #3
Size 33x22 cm
This one feels more mysterious - what's inside? It reminds me of a morning on the beach in Sardinia. I sat reading in the sun while Andy went off exploring and collecting shells in his hat for me. He came back with his treasure and emptied them at my feet. Minutes later they all got up and walked away. Hermit crabs!
Seashell study #4
Size 33x24 cm
Matt found this one on the beach near Sete. It's quite small, smooth and beautiful in its contrast with the gritty texture of the sand.
